This is one of those recipes from the box of classic family recipes that were handed down to me. Someone cut this beauty out of a newspaper and scotch-taped it to a card. Now, I know that this had to have happened a few decades ago, because 1) the newspaper was VERY yellowed, 2) so was the scotch tape, and 3) the handwriting at the top of the card (titling this dish “Firemans Beans”) had that distinctive script of one of my great grandmothers.Jump to Recipe
Honestly, I ran across this recipe and kept putting off making it. I just didn’t think it sounded good. I think I put it off for a good two or three years. Then there was the night I was desperately trying to figure out what to do with a pound of ground beef, saw the can of baked beans in my pantry, and remembered this little gem hidden away in my recipe box. Better now than never I thought. Y’all. This is good. Like REALLY good. Like, kick myself for not making it sooner good. And easy. I served this up with a quick salad, and we were set.
One-Pot Meals are the Best
For real. If I could somehow wave my magic wand (which let’s face it, probably looks a little like a wooden spoon at this point…) and make every dinner a one-pot meal, I totally would. Do a little prep here, add a few bits and pieces there, throw it in the oven for a while, and before ya have a chance to finish those two loads of laundry that you really should have finished earlier today… dinner is on the table. Boom.
The fact that this is a classic, well-loved recipe that also checks all the boxes of being easy to make, delicious, and one-pot make it a real winner in my book. Classic Fireman’s Beans
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 small onion chopped
- 1/2 green bell pepper chopped
- 1 large can 21-28oz baked beans
- 1/4 c brown sugar
- 3 Tbsp prepared mustard
- 1 c BBQ sauce I used a little less…
- 8 rounds of biscuit dough You can also just make drop buscuits on top if you don’t want to roll & cut out dough
- Preheat oven to 350F.
- Brown off the ground beef, onion, and green pepper. Drain.
- Mix into baked beans, brown sugar, mustard, and BBQ sauce. Place in large baking dish. Bake for 1 and 1/2 hours.
- When done, place biscuits on top and bake an additional 20 minutes, until browned.
