Ok, so now that you know all the basics of what makes a Rockcrok a Rockcrok, let’s cover the easiest part of owning one: getting started!
Seasoning of the Rockcrok
This is easy. Rockcroks are ready to go straight out of the box. Sure, you may want to wash it prior to the first use, but that’s pretty standard. Box dust does not good food make.
Using a Rockcrok on the stove
Rockcroks are totally safe to use on all stovetops, with the exception of induction stovetops. This is just because there aren’t any magnetic capabilities in Rockcroks to work with induction. I do recommend slowly warming up the Rockcrok from low to medium to medium-high (or whatever you plan to cook at) simply because the stone retains heat so well that you may find that you don’t need as high of heat with it as you’re used to cooking with. I’ll cover this more in the next post about cooking with your Rockcrok.
Using a Rockcrok in the oven
Your new Rockcrok is totally oven-safe and can be used at any temperature–even under the broiler! The lid, however, is only oven-safe to 400F, and cannot be used under the broiler. Like using the pan on the stovetop, know that the clay is super-heat retentive, and you’ll probably find that baking takes less time than with a standard pan because of this. I actually really like this feature, as it helps to keep my utility bill down a bit. Again, I’ll post more about this in the cooking with the Rockcrok post.
Using a Rockcrok in the microwave
Both the pan and lid are completely safe to use in the microwave! So, say you made a nice batch of chili in your Rockcrok Dutch Oven and want to reheat it a few days later? Yup. Take it right from the fridge to the microwave. Less dishes to clean up… that’s a huge win for me!
Using a Rockcrok on the grill
Your Rockcrok is completely grill-safe and can be used on direct or indirect heat on gas or charcoal grills. That said, the lid is not grill-safe. If you’re in need of a lid while grilling, use heavy-duty foil to cover your Rockcrok.
